...until it is written down.
That was our theme last week as we set goals for the new year. Each person chose a paper color and a sharpie and set to work writing down their goals. We had an extra stack for family goals.
Last year, we set and achieved many individual and family goals and we hope to be able to do the same this year.
We are excited about 2009. This year will bring many fun milestones and opportunities for growth. In August, Ricky and I will celebrate our 15th anniversary. Trent will turn 13 in March, become an official teenager and is on track to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in the fall. Riley will be 11 in February and will start her last year in Elementary School. Brant will be eight in February and is super-excited about being baptized and going to Cub Scouts. Lance turns five in June and will start Kindergarten. Gavin will be two next month and is learning more and more every day.
So with that in mind, here is a sampling of our not-too-personal goals. Each person, except for Gavin, filled out 12 pieces of paper, so here is just a sampling:
*As a family we will do one service activity per month. To build our food storage, we will focus on water storage and starting our garden.
Ricky and Gavin have already started on that one.
*Ricky and I have set personal goals in the areas of Family, Marriage, Health and Spirit. He has resolved to spend individual time with each child each week. I have resolved to have the house clean every morning by 10am. We both will exercise more, date more and read the Book of Mormon again this year.
*Trent has had help with his goals by his youth leaders at church. The youth have been challenged to read the scriptures for at least 5 minutes each day, pray morning and night, and smile every day. Trent has set personal goals to get his Eagle Scout this year and hike to the top of Mount Timpanogos.
*Riley has committed herself to turning off the lights in her room and closet when she leaves for school, brushing her teeth for the 2 full minutes her Orthodontist has recommended to prepare for braces, and finishing her Faith in God.
*Brant wants to read more Spanish at home, speak better Spanish, and learn to play the piano and choose the right.
*Lance dictated his goals to me so I could write them down. His very first goal is to be a size medium because he doesn't want to be small anymore. He would also like to drink hot chocolate every day when it's cold outside, learn to read and learn to ride a bike.
*Gavin can't speak in sentences yet or express himself very well. But, if he could, I'm sure he would say that he wants to get on the potty train this year as well as stop shrieking when he doesn't get his way. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it?
Here's to you, 2009.........
