{General Conference}
Ricky had two tickets to the Saturday Morning session of General Conference and asked Lance if he would like to go. Lance was super-excited to see Conference live in the Conference Center. Since he just turned eight last June, this is the first conference that he can attend in person. They drove to Sandy, ate breakfast at Chick-fil-a, then rode the Trax to Salt Lake.
Lance is also very proud that he was there in person and heard President Monson announce the change in the age that Young Men must be to serve a mission. Trent was working this morning so Riley, Brant, and I were watching at home when the announcement was made. It took me a while for it to really sink in that our time with Trent at home was just shortened by 10 months. Instead of him being eligible to serve in 2 1/2 years, he will now be able to serve when he graduates in a little over a year and a half. Wow. I was excited to talk to Trent about it. He was filming a peewee football game in Eagle Mountain and said that right when President Monson made the announcement, everyone on the sideline started spreading the word and talking about it. A few minutes after Conference was over, I got this text from him...
My heart was so happy to read his simple response... "I'm glad". That good boy of mine who has never given us a bit of trouble responds to the news with, "I'm glad". I know that he will continue to prepare for missionary service just like he has already been doing with that same willing attitude. And when the time comes for him to answer the call, that willingness to serve will be a blessing to him and everyone he touches as a missionary.
Ricky called me right when he and Lance left the Conference Center. We talked about the change, how exciting it is for Young Men everywhere and then he got a little emotional when we discussed what it meant for our family. Reality sure sets in when what seems like forever away when little boys are young is suddenly right around the corner.
